Notifying Responsible Parties

injury3It is important for you to notify possible defendants after the accident if you intend to file a personal injury claim. At the beginning you don’t need to give any detailed information to those involved or their insurance companies about your injuries or the accident. Letting them know there has been an accident at this place as this time is all you must do and that you will be filing a claim. First decide just whom you must notify, those who might be responsible. If you were involved in a car accident you will notify the drivers of any cars involved, the owners, the employers of the drivers if a company car was involved and your own insurance company.  There may be others, depending on the type of accident, if it was a slip or fall or a vehicle. Once you have your list of who needs to be notified, begin by writing letters to each and let them know you were injured. Keep it simple, typed letter with basic info and ask for a response. No mentions of fault or responsibility, or the type of injury, that will be taken care of later. Don’t wait to long, within the first week or so is a good amount of time.
